The Watcher's national structure was similar to that of the Dark Elves, they lived in independent city-states. Their society structure inside and between the cities was, however, completely different. The cities treated each other with respect and simply didn't form any single nation because it was highly inconvinient and would have, in the long run, hampered the efficiency of all cities because there was considerable communication delay and their own traveling skills were pretty limited despite their natural telekinesis. There were never any power-games or bickering between the cities. Inside the cities, there was an "ideal" communism, where everyone worked according to their ability and took according to their need, while there was security, it was only to make sure none of the other races (who were also allowed to visit the city as merchants and tourists) caused any trouble. The watchers were the only race who were capable of utilizing magic to its full extent. This came from their natural telekinesis: they could shape perfectly symmetrical items. If a perfectly symmetrical item is enchanted, then the mana in it is stable and doesn't attract additional mana. All their magical items had enchantments to protect them from damage (so they'd remain perfectly symmetrical) and fail-safes that caused the spells cast on them to be released if the item did get damaged and was no longer symmetrical. Their perhaps most remarkable feat was the invention of magical barrier fields. Shortly after discovering those, the Watcher mages also invented the crystal mathematics core, essentially a computer in our world. It's only drawback was that the best way they could communicate with the calculating core was by touching a "sensitive" magical barrier, which essentially became a touchscreen-only computer interface. The trick was, the barrier was non-responsive to their telekinesis and they had to build artificial hands that they could use to touch the screens (the hands were moved by telekinesis, of course). These inventions allowed centralizing the control over the city's security and production, enhancing both several times, allowing their people to focus on living good lives. Their cities became a true utopia. The idea of good lives for the mages, however, was to explore the universe, magic and the mechanics of both even further. Several major breakthroughs were made in all fields and the construction of the Intercity Gateways was started. At first the gates worked properlym since they were fixed to a certain destination gate. However, a dragon mage with his/her own research proposed the idea of "fluid" gates. Gates that could quickly change the destination and recieve things from gates other than the destination. This wold also have allowed using the gates to go to places that didn't have their own gate, like the Dragon "cities". The fluid gates worked in theory, however, during the first full test, something went terribly wrong. There was a series of magical explosions and implosion of some kind, which cascaded through all normal fixed gates as well. It resulted in the populace of all the Watcher cities disappearing. Noone really knows what happened to them, as all those capable of reading the Watcher's written language were in Watcher cities and disappeared also. However, the portals are still active, even if there is noone to operate them, and every once in a while, something came out from behind the gates. Mostly odd monsters that now enroach all the lower levels of all the Watcher cities.
